01

Choose cabinets around the room, storage, and final layout

Kitchen cabinet replacement begins with the actual room: wall lengths, appliance locations, plumbing, doors, windows, circulation, storage needs, and the way the new countertop will meet each cabinet run. The scope may include base cabinets, upper cabinets, pantry storage, island cabinets, refrigerator panels, finished ends, and trim details.

White Shaker, Natural or Maple, and Gray Shaker are practical starting points when available and appropriate to the project. Final selections are confirmed against the current cabinet catalog, finish availability, hardware, countertop material, flooring, backsplash, and overall budget.

02

Plan cabinet height, fillers, panels, and appliances together

Upper cabinets may extend to 42 inches or toward the ceiling when the room height, crown detail, access, and appliance clearances make that configuration appropriate. Microwave, hood, refrigerator, window, and ceiling conditions must be resolved before cabinets are ordered or installed.

Fillers protect door and drawer operation near walls and corners. Refrigerator panels, exposed finished sides, island backs, toe kicks, scribes, and crown or light-rail details should be included in the layout rather than treated as last-minute corrections.

03

Level, secure, and support the cabinets before template

Countertop template should begin only after the supporting cabinets are installed in their final position, adequately level, securely fastened, and structurally ready for the selected surface. Uneven cabinet runs can affect countertop fit, seams, appliance clearances, backsplash alignment, and long-term support.

Small field conditions may be addressed with an appropriate practical correction. Cabinets that are materially out of level, unstable, damaged, or improperly supported should be corrected before the countertop is templated or installed. Stone should not be used to conceal a cabinet-readiness problem.

  • Island and overhang support reviewed

Coordinate both scopes before fabrication begins

Cabinet layout determines countertop dimensions, overhangs, sink placement, appliance openings, corner conditions, exposed ends, island geometry, and support. Coordinating both scopes early reduces field changes after the slab has been templated or cut.

When cabinet replacement is part of a larger kitchen remodel, Backup Services can define the sequence and clarify which demolition, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, backsplash, and finish items are included in the agreed project scope.

05

Cabinets → readiness and leveling → template → fabrication → installation

After cabinet installation, the completed runs are reviewed for position, level, fastening, panels, fillers, appliance fit, sink-base conditions, island support, and countertop overhang requirements. Once the base is ready, field template records the dimensions and conditions that will control fabrication.

The approved slab layout then moves into fabrication, including cutouts, edges, backsplash, seams, and other agreed details. Countertop installation follows when the fabricated pieces and jobsite are ready. Most standard stone projects move through fabrication and installation in approximately 3–5 business days after the slab is in Backup Services’ possession, subject to project conditions.

Project questions, answered clearly

Material, fabrication, and installation details are confirmed for the actual scope and jobsite before work begins.

Do cabinets need to be installed before countertop template?+

Yes. Supporting cabinets should be in their final position, adequately level, securely fastened, and structurally ready before the countertop is templated.

Can upper cabinets extend to the ceiling?+

A 42-inch or near-ceiling upper-cabinet configuration may be appropriate when ceiling height, crown, access, appliances, windows, and the room layout support it. Final dimensions must be confirmed for the actual kitchen.

Why are fillers and finished panels important?+

Fillers help doors and drawers operate near walls and corners. Finished panels complete exposed cabinet sides, islands, and refrigerator areas and should be planned before ordering and installation.

Can cabinet replacement be coordinated with new countertops?+

Yes. Coordinating the cabinet layout and countertop scope together helps resolve sink placement, appliances, overhangs, support, seams, backsplash, template timing, and installation sequence.
